ABOUT ME

Roger Haus

Painter & AI pioneer, Founder at @hai.manga

Roger Haus is a visionary artist who has been delivering the wow factor in his work for over a decade. Known for his original creations filled with humour and personal symbols, he uses street art, illustration, acrylics, and cutting-edge technology to explore the relation of human and animal. His art has been exhibited in 10 countries and collected worldwide, with major venues like Times Square and the Seattle Art Museum celebrating his work. Roger started using AI technology for his art as early as in 2015 and founded the viral "HAI" project in 2023.

Trained at La Llotja Art and Crafts Academy in Barcelona, one of Spain’s oldest and most prestigious art institutions, where renowned artists such as Picasso and Miró honed their craft, Roger Haus developed a strong traditional background in painting and illustration. He was part of the final selected group of students to study at the Academy’s renowned location on Avinyó Street in Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter, before it closed.

Later, Roger continued his training at IDEP Barcelona — Escola Superior d’Imatge i Disseny, a leading school specialising in design, visual communication, photography, and digital technologies, known for its strong emphasis on the integration of technology into creative practice. Meanwhile, passionate about manga, street art, and photography, he filled the streets with graffiti and his notebooks with daily illustrations.

Since his early days, Roger Haus has embraced automatism and the hypnagogic state as a means of spontaneous expression, allowing his imagination to emerge freely onto the page and canvas. His figurative and abstract works have often featured animals and joyful surreal creatures. From the very beginning, his artistic language was drawn toward a recurring cast of creatures: cats, dogs, birds, hyenas, and mantises.

In 2015, Roger began experimenting with generative neural networks as an art instrument, making him one of the early pioneers in this field. That year, Google released a simple application called DeepDream, which could generate new imagery from an uploaded image. Roger experimented with the technology using his traditional paintings as source material. The experience was highly unpredictable, as there was still no way to guide the algorithm through text prompts. Instead, DeepDream reinterpreted the original image in an intensely psychedelic manner. One of the results was a portrait of dogs covered with dozens of reptilian eyes. That felt surreal.

Roger has been fascinated by Surrealism for as long as he can remember, particularly by the game of “Exquisite Corpse.” A patron of creators, in 2020, he organized the world’s largest curated digital “Cadavre Exquis” collaboration with the Exquisite Workers collective, which he founded. The massive @exquisiteworkers curations featuring hundreds of artists worldwide ran from 2020 to 2023 on Instagram and blockchain with the final exhibition in the Picasso Museum of Barcelona.

In 2022, Roger discovered Disco Diffusion, an open-source generative model already capable of producing static and animated images from text prompts. Later that same year, DALL·E 2 and Midjourney emerged, offering even greater control over the creative process. Roger was already there.

In 2023, Roger founded @hai.manga. The name HAI means “yes” in Japanese—an affirmation, an openness to the future, to curiosity, transformation, and new forms of artistic creation. HAI explores human and animal as one. The animal comes close—so close it covers the face. Its eye becomes yours. These figures feel protective, almost familiar. They are not outside of us, but part of what we feel—what we carry within.

One of his iconic artworks, "Girl with a Black Cat", gained over 50 million views on Twitter (X) in 2024 before AI became the mainstream conversation. As AI continues to progress and evolve, looking back on the collection in the future will allow us to see what was created during this exciting time in the field’s history.

Over the years, Roger has collaborated with prominent institutions, including Universal Music, Picasso Museum, CaixaForum, and the Joan Miró Foundation. His work has been highlighted in Times Square, NYC, Seattle Art Museum, and by WeTransfer. His art has been exhibited in the USA, Canada, France, Spain, Switzerland, Japan, and South Korea, making big waves on social media.

Roger's recent solo exhibition in Galerie Gleis4 in Zug, Switzerland (May 2026) was constructed between painting and the algorithm: original HAI works appear as limited edition giclée prints on paper and canvas, while traditional painting in collaboration with Anna Dart established a direct relationship between digital processes and the manual gesture.

Roger Haus is currently based in Switzerland, working full-time from his studio. He paints with acrylics on canvas exploring the relation of the human and animal, and produces AI images and animations for the @hai.manga project.
